Google Will Sign EU's AI Code of Practice, Company Says, But Has Concerns — Market Talk

Alphabet's Google will sign the EU's AI Code of Practice, but is concerned that efforts to govern nascent artificial intelligence tools will slow their development and deployment in Europe, the company's chief legal officer, Kent Walker, says in a statement. "Departures from EU copyright law, steps that slow approvals, or requirements that expose trade secrets could chill European model development and deployment, harming Europe's competitiveness," he says. The search giant joins others--including AI groups Anthropic and OpenAI--in agreeing to sign the code once it is approved by a body that includes representatives from each of the EU's 27 member states. "We will be an active voice in supporting a pro-innovation approach that leads to future investment and innovation in Europe that benefits everyone," Walker says. (edith.hancock@wsj.com)
